With their first selection on Day Three of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions chose to address their depth needs at the defensive end position.

In the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions opted to use the eighth overall selection on the offensive side of the ball, landing Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson. On Day Two, the Lions flipped the script and drafted solely for defense, landing Hawaii linebacker Jahlani Tavai and safety Will Harris in the second and third round respectively.

The Lions started Day Three trading down from 111th to 117th, getting pick 186th in the sixth round. So who did they get moving down six spots?

With the 117th overall selection in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select …

NAME: Austin Bryant
POSITION: DE
SCHOOL: Clemson
HT/WT: 6-4, 271
AGE: 22
2018 STATS: 45 tackles, 15.0 tfls, 8.5 sacks
PROS: Length, long arms, high-motor, good burst
CONS: Balance, plays high, poor bend, strength

QUICK ANALYSIS: The Lions add another defensive end to their rotation with Bryant. He’ll likely be a rotational defender behind new free agent Trey Flowers and 2018 sack leader Romeo Okwara, giving him extra time to develop as a pass rusher and to learn Matt Patricia’s complicated defensive scheme.
