2019 NFL Draft: Sixth Round, 184th Overall

The Detroit Lions select …

Name: Gardner Minshew
Position: Quarterback
School: Washington State
Height/Weight: 6-1, 225
2018 Stats: 13 games played, 71% completion, 4,779 passing yards, 38 touchdowns, 9 interceptions
Draft Round Projection: 6th round – FA

Pick Analysis: The Lions are certainly in the market for a backup quarterback, and starter Matthew Stafford’s massive contract has prevented the them from spending any significant money on a proven second stringer. They seem ready to move on from last year’s stand-in Matt Cassel, and unproven Connor Cook is the only other quarterback currently on the roster.

The Lions could look for a young signal caller earlier in the draft, but Bob Quinn has taken quarterbacks in the sixth round twice before. Remember Jake Rudock and Brad Kaaya? Maybe his third swing will be one that sticks and Minshew would be a solid choice here.

In his first season with the Cougars after transferring from East Carolina, Minshew lit up the Pac- 12 to the tune of 38 touchdowns and nearly 5,000 passing yards in 2018. While his lack of arm strength will likely hinder his starting potential in the NFL, he could be an intriguing project as a backup due to his leadership qualities and charisma.
