Free agency is helping the Detroit Lions try to build a winner. Needs still exist on the roster, though. Here’s what happened in the second week of free agency.

The Detroit Lions are more than a week into free agency and college prospects are well into their pro day schedules. The NFL offseason is in full swing after the start of the new league year. Recent moves by Lion’s general manager, Bob Quinn, have addressed some big needs and depth but we’ll examine what’s left to do before training camp.

The Detroit Lions have targeted a handful of free agents to sign and pursue since the start of the 2019 season. Former Patriot Trey Flowers, Justin Coleman and Jesse James are the only three deals that are multi-year deals. Every other deal is a one year proposition.

Updates on Detroit Lions signings

Aside from the players mentioned above, the Lions have signed  a few others, too. Spotrac has the numbers on the ten players that have signed or re-signed in the Motor City. Oday Aboushi, Andrew Adams, Tommylee Lewis, Marcus Cooper, and Logan Thomas have all officially signed contracts.

The Lions extended an offer sheet to backup running back Malcolm Brown, who is a restricted free agent. Although Zach Zenner is now under his new contract, the Lions continue to search for a number two runner behind incumbent Kerryon Johnson. Likewise, the front office has no other quarterback behind starter Matthew Stafford with any experience, just Connor Cook who was picked up on a futures contract.

Aboushi adds to the stable of offensive linemen and is a candidate to replace former starter, T.J. Lang, who is apparently retiring after injuries have caught up to him.

Wide receiver, Lewis, provides depth behind starters Marvin Jones, Kenny Golladay. Logan Thomas and Jesse James will help to bring back tight end play to the offense and give Stafford two reliable targets.

Coleman and Adams both give depth to the Lions’ secondary, however it has been speculated that Patricia wants to move Coleman outside where he has played under the current Lions’ head coach during their previous stints in Foxborough. Re-signing Marcus Cooper adds depth and on special teams.

The Detroit Lions will look to shore up a few other positions prior to the 2019 NFL Draft too. These early moves could give us a glimpse of what Bob Quinn is planning for the draft in late April as well.
