Even though they may have a franchise quarterback in Matthew Stafford, the Detroit Lions cannot pass on drafting the next one.

The Detroit Lions must consider drafting a quarterback in the first round (pick 8) of this year’s NFL Draft. The two top guys at the quarterback position are Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins and Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray.

The biggest news out of the “Underwear Olympics” (also known as the NFL Scouting Combine) was the height (5-foot 10 inches), weight (207 pounds), and hand size (nine and a half inches) of Murray. Most thought Murray was only 5-foot 9 inches tall, so that extra inch made a big difference in his draft stock.

There are even rumors that Murray may shoot up to the number one pick overall by the Arizona Cardinals. But much can change before the draft starts on April 25, and honestly so many rumors are just about increased values for possible trades.

The Detroit Lions don’t need to chase either of these players for their roster. They have a starter in quarterback Matthew Stafford. And they are certainly financially committed with fours still left on his mega deal – five years, $135 million beginning with the 2018 season.

The best thing that can happen for Detroit is that both players are off the board when it is their turn to select. This will push a talented defensive player right to their pick. And this team needs an impact player on the defensive side of the ball.
