Detroit Lions: Wide receivers to consider each day of 2019 draft
Round Five: Keelan Doss, WR, UC Davis
Doss comes from a small FCS school so it is hard to know how well his game will translate to the NFL. However, he did perform well during the Senior Bowl practices and game, showing he can still produce against top competition.
He has a good size and speed combination that you would expect to succeed at least a bit in the NFL. He will need time to transition to facing NFL caliber players on a daily basis, but taking a shot on Doss in the fifth round would not be a bad way to spend the pick.
The Draft Network‘s Brad Kelly, a brilliant wide receiver analyst, wrote that Doss “has an excellent physical profile for the next level” and that “his projection to the next level will be based on his vertical route running traits and ability in contested spots”.
Round Six/Seven: Hunter Renfrow, WR, University of Clemson
This is a guy that, despite his seemingly physical disadvantages, always comes through when he is needed. He is the definition of a clutch player. If the Lions spent one of their sixth or seventh rounders on him I would be ecstatic.
Renfrow is a good slot receiver that is a bit undersized. Despite him being a little undersized his hands are, in my opinion, some of the best in this class. He always seems to come down with the ball somehow.
Should the Lions take Renfrow, expect him to become someone that Stafford comes to rely on more and more as he gets playing time. Renfrow is the type of receiver that every quarterback loves to have on the field with him, as they know they can always rely on him and trust him.
