At one point, the defensive secondary was a strength of the Detroit Lions. Now, there’s uncertainty in the back-end of their defense.

Lumped all into one category, the Detroit Lions have a few defensive backs up for grabs in this year’s free agent market. Who will the Lions decide to bring back and who will they allow to test the open market? Let’s look at the defensive backs who have expiring contracts this offseason.

Marcus Cooper

A late season waiver wire addition from the Chicago Bears, Cooper settled for special teams play, mostly. He wasn’t too shabby either.

The one time Pro Bowl alternate at cornerback hasn’t played at that same level for several seasons now. His best days are clearly behind him.

I could see the Lions offering him a new contract, considering he was only active for the last quarter of the year. There’s enough talent and pedigree to warrant a spot on the 90 man roster but nothing else.

DeShawn Shead

Leaving a ton to be desired, Shead couldn’t get many snaps on defense. There’s only been flashes of the ability he possesses. He’s another lengthy defender that fits what Detroit is looking for. They love versatile guys.

His experience at safety and cornerback could easily earn himself another shot with this team. Unfortunately, the injury concerns and inconsistent play might work against him.

Charles Washington

I don’t think there was a more underappreciated and surprising player than Washington. You could argue he was one of the best special teamers on the squad.

The stats aren’t impressive and he didn’t see a lick of time on defense, but those guys still hold value. Versatility to play both defensive back positions and his excellent coverage skills on the punt and kickoff units helps stake his case to stick around. Luckily, he’s also an exclusive rights free agent.

Conclusion

Can’t say there’s a ton of talent leaving the Detroit Lions at either cornerback or safety but that doesn’t mean there aren’t good enough reasons to bring any of them back. They are all expendable quite frankly.
