Although improved, running back is still a position that needs fortifying. The Detroit Lions might renew most of those contracts.

Trending in the right direction is a start to turning a corner. The Detroit Lions‘ running game looks better but it’s not complete.

Nick Bellore

Played fullback the entire season for the first time in his career with solid success. More known for his special teams ability, there’s a slight chance he returns on those abilities alone.

Nick Bawden returning to the fold after being injured all of 2018 will complicate things. Bellore’s best shot at a roster spot is likely at his original position, linebacker. His versatility probably gets him a new contract.

LeGarrette Blount

Wildly disappointing, Blount has little business returning to the Lions. If that were to happen, there might be riots in the streets of Motown the likes of which we haven’t seen since 1967.

In his defense, he wasn’t properly utilized all the time. In short-yardage situations and by the goal line, he’s effective. Being used as a complementary back, not so much.

As a number four runner, he certainly holds value. Given the connection with head coach Matt Patricia, it wouldn’t shock me to see him re-signed for super cheap. The 32 year-old bruiser is also replaceable.

Zach Zenner

Once again, the Doctor is in the house. Besides Kerryon Johnson, no running back injected more life into the ground attack of the Lions.

Zenner is as reliable as they come. His special teams ability on the coverage units should only help build his case to return. I know the fans would love that move.

Conclusion

There’s zero likelihood none of these backs get a new contract. It’s up to the Detroit Lions how much they value each guy. Free agency and the NFL Draft has some options but the pickings aren’t great either. I think Zenner stays long-term while the others get a short-term opportunity in the hopes they stick around beyond the preseason.
