Detroit Lions: What does the Darrell Bevell hiring mean?
By Robert Jones
The Detroit Lions hiring of Darrell Bevell wasn’t what the fans wanted, but could there be much more to it than what we see on the surface?
Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia wasted little time in his search for a new offensive coordinator. But instead of getting a newer, flashier model like the Motor City faithful begged for, he decided to get something a little bit more conservative.
Yesterday the news broke that the Lions had hired Darrell Bevell as their new offensive coordinator which was quickly followed by the collective sigh of disappointment throughout much of the city.
Every Lions fan, young or old, was hoping for some sharp, innovative young go-getter like Shane Waldron or Zac Taylor or Chad O’Shea to name a few of the possibilities that were on the lips of Honolulu Blue and Silver fans everywhere.
But it was simply not to be.
The next thing that happened was the radio media running amuck proclaiming this signified the end of the Matthew Stafford era or that the Lions were now in total rebuild mode.
For some fans, either one or even both of those options are appealing. The chance to get a fresh start and build from the ground up. The problem is that both directions would require patience that the fans of this franchise simply don’t have anymore.
Not to mention how many times we’ve seen this picture and its horrifying sequels.
Yet as we sift through the aftermath of this hiring, there is much more to be examined before we can truly make any kind of rational judgment. What appears to be just another ‘good old boys network’ type of hiring actually has reasons why it could work.
Of course, while we’re on the subject, it also has reasons why it may not.
Because ultimately for the Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia era to survive and flourish, making the Lions the legitimate championship contenders every fan in the Motor City has spent a lifetime dreaming about, it will come down to Darrell Bevell’s ability to get the most out of this offense.
