Sacks are one thing, pressures are another. Despite success taking down quarterbacks effectively, the Detroit Lions need improvement on the edge.

Defense saved the Detroit Lions on many occasions this past season. Even though they were among the top teams in sacks, they were one of the worst pressuring the quarterback.

A combination of the draft and free agency will do the trick to improve the defensive end/outside linebacker position. Are any players from 2018 set to return? Here are my thoughts.

Ziggy Ansah

Unarguably, no pass rusher was better and as frustrating as Ansah. A shoulder ailment limited his season and it painted a pretty unclear picture of his future.

It hasn’t been completely ruled out he wouldn’t return. I’d be willing to bet there’s a slim chance that happens. Committing to him financially is a toss-up.

Eli Harold

The lone linebacker of the bunch is the prime example of what a stand-up outside rusher looks like. Harold is all about speed and added nice depth to the rotation of pass rushers.

His abilities aren’t exceedingly impressive but he’s worth bringing back at a competitive price. I’d expect him to return but the Lions won’t break the bank either.

Kerry Hyder Jr.

A torn Achilles robbed his 2017 season and was slowed down the next one. Hyder Jr. factored little throughout the year and was a healthy scratch for several games.

Still, he’s an exclusive rights free agent, making him a no-brainer to re-sign. Whether or not he survives roster cuts to 53 is another story.

Romeo Okwara

Cut from one team to leading another in sacks, Okwara surprised many. At a cheap price, the Lions will more than certainly take advantage of his restricted free agent status.

He’s a solid depth piece but still isn’t a consistent enough threat to the quarterback. His services are needed but an upgrade is still necessary.

dark. Next. Bob Quinn, Matt Patricia should remember ‘buyer beware’

Conclusion

No matter how you slice it, the Detroit Lions are in the market for edge rushers. Only one player I’d feel comfortable saying is gone in 2019. The others are exceptional and are worthy of a 90 man roster spot with the potential to make the final roster.
