Karl Joseph, SS – Oakland Raiders

Karl Joseph is a physically talented safety who hasn’t done much to make himself stand out to Raiders head coach Jon Gruden. Joseph is supposedly on the trade block and he should have some interest as he was a former first-round pick for a reason.

More from Lions Free Agency

Most likely the Lions will not have safety Glover Quin back with the team next year and quality depth is not a strength at the safety position. Joseph is someone who could potentially challenge for the starting job and at the very least would provide a solid depth player.

Joseph graded out at a 74.2 this season by PFF. Lions safeties that should be around next year are Tracy Walker, who graded out at 89.8, Quandre Diggs, who graded out at 72.7, and Tavon Wilson, who graded out at 68.0.

Joseph is a bruiser who would likely play closer to the line of scrimmage than players like Diggs or Walker. He would probably be a good run defender at safety and has some solid coverage skills too. He would probably see the field whenever the Lions ran a three-safety look on defense along with Diggs and Walker.

Joseph has two more years left on his deal (if his fifth-year option is exercised) at about $2.1 million per year. At his young age and cheap price tag, he is worth a look.

It would not take much to get him from the Raiders. The Lions could probably get him with their sixth-round pick or their fifth-round selection at most.
