Are the Detroit Lions throwing away their chance to draft a player who can carry them to a championship by winning games?

After the Detroit Lions posted a relatively convincing, yet boring, win over the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday, the natives have become restless.

That’s right, the Detroit Faithful want that high draft pick because it will lead them to the promised land; the Super Bowl.

At least that’s the spin we have heard over and over on sports talk radio and around the water cooler. If we get that high pick, then the sky is the limit. The Lions will suddenly in the blink of an eye see their fortunes turnaround as we listen to commissioner Roger Goodell read off the name of the Lions top draft pick.

You know, the irony is that since all the Lions have to do to become champions is get a top-five pick, if not the top pick, they should have had bad, losing seasons before now.

Oh wait, that’s just about the only kind of seasons the Lions have had in the last 60 years. But, that also means they’ve had a lot of high draft picks. So how on earth have they not won the Super Bowl several times by now because of those top picks that came to town to save the day?

I mean, if you listen to everyone with all the answers out there spewing the virtues of having a high draft pick, then obviously the Lions, who have had many high draft picks over the years, should have achieved championship glory by now. Several times.

Instead, the Lions have been a franchise in a constant state of flux and basically rebuilding since 1957, with nothing to show for it except frustrated fans who are tired of waiting for a winner.

Oh yes, the Lions have drafted some superstars like Billy Sims, Barry Sanders, Herman Moore and Calvin Johnson, but they have no trophies or championship rings to show for it.

So how will next years draft be different?
