Ezekiel Ansah, Defensive End

A first-round pick in 2013, defensive end Ezekiel Ansah is another player on the Detroit Lions who has had injuries derail his career. The former Pro Bowler has lead the team in sacks multiple times and has been a key piece of the defensive line, when he’s healthy.

More from SideLion Report

The issue is that Ansah has only appeared in three games so far this season, showing up on the field for a mere 46 defensive snaps. In that limited action, the 29-year-old defensive end has only contributed 2.0 sacks and six total tackles. On a one-year, $17.1 million franchise tag, Ansah has not met expectations at all.

The Lions have a big decision to make regarding the defensive end’s future. He is the team’s most talented player at the position, but his injuries make his play too inconsistent for Detroit to want to bring him back.

The team has brought in many players who have stepped up on the defensive line, including rookie defensive tackle Da’Shawn Hand, linebacker Devon Kennard, and defensive end Romeo Okwara. These players have been able to capitalize on more opportunities with Ansah out and have become key contributors to the pass rush.

Detroit will most likely be targeting some defensive ends in the offseason via the draft and free agency. If they do, that will end any chance that they bring back Ansah on a new deal.

Ezekiel Ansah may be one of the best defensive ends in the team’s history, but the Detroit Lions need a consistent pass rusher. And Ansah can’t stay healthy enough to contribute. It may be time for the team to move on.
