Before launching into the mock draft let’s first lay out some mock draft basics. I will be using the On The Clock 2019 resource located on fanspeak.com to host my mock draft. I will be drafting as the Detroit Lions for seven rounds, I will be using the Fanspeak big board (it is the most updated big board), and the algorithm is set to “difficult”.

Round One, Pick Seven: Quinnen Williams, Defensive Lineman, Alabama

With their first pick of the 2019 NFL draft the Detroit Lions have selected Quinnen Williams. Williams is an absolute stud and would be a massive upgrade for the defensive line.

Williams would give the Leos another run stopping force to go with the already “dynamic duo” of Damon “Snacks” Harrison and A’Shawn Robinson. Not only would he provide an impact by stopping the run, but he would also be a great disruptive force in the middle of the line on passing downs. Williams is elite in both rushing the passer and defending the run.

Williams has 49 tackles, five sacks, and one pass defended. Although the sack numbers are not very high, he is still a factor almost every play.

Williams is currently ranked as the number three overall player on Matt Miller’s big board behind only Nick Bosa and Ed Oliver. While Oliver is also an elite prospect, had he been available at this point in the mock, I still would have selected Williams as I like his tape and trait combination better.

Quinnen Williams would most likely be a three down starter for the Lions very soon into his rookie year. The Draft Network’s Jon Ledyard explains by writing:

"“Exceptional power and violence in his hands… Controls exchanges at the line of scrimmage with terrific hand placement and torque. Terrific job processing his keys and attacking, difficult to reach in the run game… shows a quick first step off the snap. Reaction timing to the snap is excellent… Wide array of rush moves. Rips, clubs, snatches, swims are all used frequently. Can challenge interior offensive linemen on their edge or with power on a bull rush”."

Williams would be an elite defender for Detroit immediately and would be in the running for defensive rookie of the year. Drafting him as the seventh overall pick in the draft would be well worth it. He could being an Aaron Donald-type impact to the Motor City.

Other options considered: Christian Wilkins (Clemson Defensive Lineman), Greedy Williams (LSU Cornerback), Rashan Gary (Michigan Edge Rusher), and Noah Fant (Iowa Tight End)
