After an embarrassing loss to the Chicago Bears, any dreams of making the playoffs are dead. So here’s a way the Detroit Lions could attack the 2019 draft.

The Detroit Lions started the season with a crushing defeat to the New York Jets by a score of 48-17. Then came out flat against the San Francisco 49ers and fell short of a comeback win. In Week Three, against the New England Patriots, they came out fired up and laid a beating on head coach Matt Patricia’s former team.

Fans started to believe. They started saying “the team has it figured out”, “they can make the playoffs if we keep this up”. Then the Lions lost to the Dallas Cowboys the following week and fans were right back to asking who this team really was.

We thought we had the answer three weeks later after taking care of the Miami Dolphins without a problem following a bye week and a strong win over the Green Bay Packers the week before that. Then the Seattle Seahawks came to town and it all started collapsing again.

The Lions were outmatched in every way against the Seahawks. Then, after having just traded away lead wide receiver Golden Tate, were bullied by the Minnesota Vikings for 10 sacks and beaten by a score of 24-9. But finally, the team Detroit seemed to always beat was right around the corner; surely they could get back on track against the Chicago Bears right? After all, #WeOwnTheBears.

But that proved to be not as easy as we thought. The Lions came out and spotted the Bears 26 points before waking up and getting back in it by the fourth quarter. But it was too little, too late. The game ended with the score of 34-22 in favor of the Bears.

Suddenly, things don’t seem so promising, not as much hope around Motor City. And when you look at the schedule, and look at their 3-6 record, things get bleaker.

At 3-6, Detroit could make things interesting if they could win out. But that seems highly unlikely the way this team has played the last three weeks and the schedule doesn’t get easier.

With remaining games against the likes of the Carolina Panthers, the Bears, the Los Angeles Rams, and finishing the year up with back to back games against the Vikings and Packers, it’s hard to see any hope for the playoffs.

At this point, it seems like the best record fans could hope for is 7-9, with wins against the Panthers, the Bears, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Buffalo Bills. The three losses would come against the Rams, the Vikings, and the Packers.

Even though the playoffs are out of reach, there are still things to look forward to. Namely, the 2019 NFL Draft. There are tons of players in the upcoming draft that could contribute to Motown immediately, and this is a draft class I am very excited for. The strengths of this class line up perfectly with the weaknesses of the Motor City.
