So with that being the case, where does the problem lie?

It’s harsh to put it all on the players and they don’t deserve it all, but in the front seven there are two issues that seem to be plaguing them. One is that they have been undisciplined in running their assignments. The second is that the Lions simply don’t have the players to run this system well.

Plain and simple they aren’t good enough.

Yet when Quinn and Patricia reviewed the tape from last season to evaluate the roster Patricia was inheriting, they made the decision that there was enough inherited talent that Patricia could make it work. They obviously overestimated either the players abilities or Patricia’s ability to make it work.

I would think they should have learned their lesson by now.

So where is this season headed? Most likely to an unceremoniously poor ending. If the Lions could get on a little bit of a roll at one point and find a way to break even at 8-8 this year, I think we should all be pleased with that much progress.

For those of you who want point out that they were 9-7 last season and within one win of being in the playoffs, yes I do realize that. But with a new coach, new system and the need to re-vamp the defensive personnel in order to make it all work, how can there not be a step backwards?

The Lions offense should only improve as the season goes on and keep them in games with the opportunity to win. However, every team needs at least a couple of key stops during the course of a game. At this point the Lions are incapable of getting those key stops as displayed last Sunday in Dallas.

So are we destined to be disappointed by our beloved Lions again? It would certainly appear so, but if this step backwards is followed up with a successful offseason next spring that brings in the players they need in the front seven and maybe a top tier corner back to line up across from Darius Slay, then maybe for once that disappointment may actually be worth the price we the fans have to pay.

Maybe…
