Should the Detroit Lions re-sign Corey Robinson?

Traded from the Detroit Lions before the 2018 season, offensive tackle Corey Robinson is now a free agent. Is he worth bringing back to Motown?

Earlier this month, a conditional 2020 seventh round pick was traded to the Detroit Lions compliments of the Carolina Panthers. In exchange, the Panthers got backup swing tackle Corey Robinson. That experiment has since ended in Carolina.

Playing just one snap for the Panthers, the 26-year old Robinson is now on the market. And his most logical destination is to return to back to the Lions. Injuries ultimately lead to his exit from the Motor City. When healthy, the fourth-year tackle was a solid backup.

Most of Robinson’s starts have come at right tackle, but he had can play at right guard in emergency duty. His skills are better suited for that side, even though he was exclusively a starter at left tackle for the University of South Carolina.

Currently, offensive tackle Andrew Donnal is fourth on the depth chart and not many would consider him an upgrade over Robinson. It wouldn’t come as a surprise if we saw the Lions reach out and nab their former 2015 seventh rounder back off the streets.

Donnal played exclusively on the right side at the University of Iowa as a tackle and guard. He’s more of a true fit for those positions but is routinely marred by injuries himself and isn’t as good of a player.

Rookie Tyrell Crosby is the Lions undisputed swing tackle. Neither Robinson or Donnal would challenge the 2018 fifth round pick from the University of Oregon for his spot.

Re-signing Corey Robinson probably wouldn’t make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things. Surely, he’s a step up from Donnal. So if I’m the Detroit Lions, I’d make the switch. No harm in testing that theory.
