Detroit Lions make moves

This is an important phase of getting to game night. Look up our depth chart, or use my link. In case you haven’t kept up with every transaction, you can see who’s left. Not many surprises. I was surprised about former cornerback, DeShawn Shead, though.

The other big move this week was the signing of Romeo Okwara, a defensive lineman waived by the New York football Giants. It was the corresponding cut that caught many people off guard, though. So long, Anthony Zettel.

I often lament that I drift between being a Same Old Lions fan and a Kool-Aid Drinker fan. That’s okay, it’s my right as an oft-jilted lover of Lions football. I’ve been let down so many times, it’s difficult to fight the feeling that the roster is in complete disarray. I don’t think it is, but it isn’t perfect, either.

That includes overhauling a linebacking unit that needed a lot of help. While Zettel’s struggles to adjust to a more flexible scheme hurt him, other new additions are coming along. Newly acquired linebacker Marquis Flowers seems to be a good fit.

Here’s what DetroitLions.com writer Tim Twentyman wrote Wednesday.

"“The Lions are hoping [Marquis] Flowers’ knowledge of the defense and his versatility on the edge can help their defense. He fits the mold of the bigger linebacker (6-3, 245) the Lions have tried to add to their defense this offseason with the signings of Devon Kennard, Christian Jones, Eli Harold and now Flowers.”"

Who is the second corner? Nevin Lawson, almost by default. Who is going to come in at guard if TJ Lang gets hurt again?  Joe Dahl or Kenny Wiggins; both of whom were not good in preseason.

Did we sign anyone behind mike linebacker, Jarrad Davis? Nope. If his struggles continue into the regular season, Nick Bellore is at fullback (but could be moved). To be safe, I’d probably look up the Jets depth chart, as well.

Sam Darnold, a rookie, is set to start at quarterback against Darius Slay and Co. Yeah, I like our chances. You can ask a lot of questions like these, and more!
