Have the Detroit Lions become the NFC North cellar dwellers?
By Robert Jones
The Detroit Lions will be kicking off their season next Monday night, but the roster turnover has been heavy since final cuts. Is it time to panic?
Next Monday night the entire world will get to witness as the Detroit Lions begin the Matt Patricia era. For better or worse. Which has many of the local fan base starting to bet on worse.
When the Lions won the Matt Patricia sweepstakes over the New York Giants, the fans were partying in the streets. The former New England Patriots defensive coordinator was the ‘chosen one’. He had the power to finally take this rag-tag franchise and drag it to championship contention with the power of his own bare hands.
Now he might be considering if he would be better off building a rocket to ship this team to Mars. If not even further away.
Remember the old adage of ‘be careful what you wish for because you might get it’? Some fans are starting to look at Patricia in the same light as Matt Millen, whose name shall not be spoken among Lions fans. Which is why I’m glad I simply wrote it instead of taking my life in my hands and actually uttering it.
My good friend called me up as soon as the news was released that the Lions had waived Anthony Zettel. ‘Do they even have any clue what they’re doing in Allen Park?’, he said.
In a way, I had to chuckle to myself. This friend who had accused me of being too hard on this new regime had finally cracked. His blue-collar hero and local product Zettel was sent packing as the Lions decided to once again claim another casualty off waivers from another team.
Apparently, this is the apocalypse.
Yet, there is no denying that the panic which is consuming the Lions fan base is at almost record levels. The question is simple; is the panic warranted?
