The Detroit Lions have cuts to make after a lackluster preseason. What positions will be toughest to make cuts? Let’s discuss a few!
Here at Kick in the Crotch Weekly, we always strive to discuss important topics regarding our Detroit Lions. The preseason is now in the books and we are getting ready for our opener against the J-E-T-S, Jets, September 10th.
Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, though, a huge task must be done. The Lions general manager, Bob Quinn, has to cut our roster (as do all NFL teams) down to 53 players by September 1st, at 4 pm. Which battles are still up in the air? Which positions will be toughest to cut players? Let’s discuss it!
Cutting corners
One of the tougher positions to decide is going to be at cornerback. Pro Bowl corner, Darius Slay, is a lock to start. After him, though, the depth and pecking order is not as apparent. Nevin Lawson, DeShawn Shead, and Teez Tabor have all had some good moments and had reps with the first team defense. So far, no one has locked down the job.
Lawson has been up-and-down when starting. Shead hasn’t played in a couple of games due to an unspecified injury. Tabor has good instincts, but gets beaten deep and doesn’t look ready for a starting gig. The depth is pretty good and includes All-Pro punt returner and slot corner, Jamal Agnew. That makes five corners; sounds about right.
Other players have done okay, but no one is banking on Sterling Moore, Dexter McDougle, rookies Mike Ford, or Chris Jones making our final roster.
Prediction: The five I mentioned above make the cut: Slay, Lawson, Shead, Tabor, and Agnew. Also, remember that Quandre Diggs (safety) could still move back to corner if needed. For that matter rookie safety, Tracy Walker could, too. Depth isn’t the issue, the second starter is.
