Detroit Lions lose close one to Raiders in preseason opener, 16-10
Second Quarter
Connor Cook put together a 10 play, 73-yard touchdown drive for the Raiders capped off with a seven-yard score by Ryan Switzer.
Detroit’s third possession was a boost for Ameer Abdullah’s odds of making the team. He had a nice gain on a draw play and he also drew a personal foul penalty on Karl Joseph with the referees enforcing the NFL’s new ”lowering the helmet” rule. That penalty kept Detroit going and after a nifty catch by Abdullah to push the yardage to first and goal, he showed great patience on a short run to punch it into the end zone for a Detroit touchdown.
On Detroit’s next possession after the score, Jake Rudock came in at quarterback and just before halftime, Oakland’s rookie kicker, Eddy Pineiro, kicked a 48-yard field goal with :02 seconds left to take a 13-7 lead.
Third Quarter
Kerryon Johnson showed up in a huge way by breaking for a massive, 57-yard scamper but just as was the case was with Lynch earlier, the run was negated by a rookie lineman. In this case, the flag was on Detroit rookie, Tyrell Crosby.
EJ Manuel came in at quarterback for Oakland and during a red zone exchange, he and his center fumbled the snap and Miles Killebrew recovered the ball.
Starting from their seven-yard line, Detroit challenged Oakland deep but the lass to Teo Redding was incomplete.
Kerry Johnson converted the third-down play on a 19 yard gain on a screen pass and after a Rudock sack, a defensive holding penalty on the Raiders allowed the Lion drive to endure.
The Lions ended the quarter with Jake Rudock overthrowing tight end Hakeem Valles in the end zone.
Fourth Quarter
Ryan Santoso came into the game in lieu of Matt Prater and made a 24-yard field goal to trim the Raider lead to only three points, pushing the score to 13-10.
Both teams offenses seemingly stalled out in the quarter with four straight punts and then Oakland put together an eight-play drive that ended with a 45-yard field goal which gave the Raiders a 16-10 lead.
Matt Cassel was brought back in to run Detroit’s two-minute offense but after converting on fourth down, the drive fell short after a fumble was forced on Cassel.
Oakland kneeled to run out the clock and put the finishing touches on a 16-10 victory over the Detroit Lions.
