Detroit Lions: Glover Quin could post a banner year in 2018
After recording the best season of his career, can 32-year old free safety Glover Quin continue to up his game for the Detroit Lions in 2018?
At the age of 31, Detroit Lions free safety Glover Quin posted the best season of his nine-year career in 2017. Quin recorded 84 total tackles, six pass defends, three interceptions and four forced fumbles. It was a performance many believed should have earned him his second Pro Bowl nomination.
Quin started his career with the Houston Texans. He was a fourth-round selection out of New Mexico in 2009. The top pick in that draft class was none other than current Lions’ quarterback Matthew Stafford. And Lions’ starting right guard T.J. Lang was also a fourth rounder in that draft. All three Detroit veterans have now clocked in a near decade in the NFL each.
After four solid seasons with the Texans, Quin took his talents to Detroit in 2013. And he’s been a Lion ever since. Quin earned his lone Pro Bowl nomination in 2014 after he led the league with seven interceptions. That season the Lions went 11-5 and earned a playoff berth under new head coach Jim Caldwell.
Now entering his tenth season in the NFL, Quin appears to be aging like fine wine. At a point in his career when many other football veterans start to drop off physically, the 32-year old Lions’ safety is primed to post an even better performance in 2018.
Recently, Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus named Quin on of his top ten safeties heading into 2018. Here’s his explanation as to why …
"” … Quin has found his perfect fit in Detroit. Delivering the highest-graded season of his career at 89.0, he tied with Byard for the fourth-highest grade at the position last year. Quin excelled against the run and in coverage, allowing just 113 yards from the 23 plays where he was targeted in primary coverage.”"
One of the reasons Glover Quin could be in store for a banner year in Motown is new head coach Matt Patricia. The former New England Patriots defensive coordinator is bringing his dynamic defensive scheme to the Detroit Lions. Quin’s experience should allow him to speed up the learning curve quicker than most, which in turn to could lead to career-high production on the field come the regular season.
