Detroit Lions: How much will the offense actually improve?
Many resources were put into the offense this offseason. The Detroit Lions should see the biggest boost from this unit in 2018.
Outside of the draft and free agency, the Detroit Lions got the most help in the form of coaching. One new, another a familiar face.
Jim Bob Cooter now has complete control of a unit that was tainted with mediocre play-calling in 2017. Known for his creativity, the undisputed offensive coordinator should ignite a unit that’s been underperforming for a few seasons now.
The spark of the offense will come in the form of Jeff Davidson. It’s well documented how pitiful the offensive line has been. With him coaching up the lineman, the Lions are primed to dominate.
Cooter is a wizard in the passing game and knows how to make a quarterback comfortable. Davidson is most successful at generating a lethal rushing attack but not as successful protecting the passer. Although it’s most concerning issue, the projected starters specialize in pass blocking.
An underrated aspect that’ll improve the unit is health. Injuries ravaged the offensive line, which certainly played a huge role in the failures to run and pass block at an acceptable level. If Detroit can have all their starters in the lineup, watch out.
Even head coach Matt Patricia knows a thing or two about coaching offensive lineman. As smart as the guy is, I’m sure he’ll have some tricks up his sleeve as well. The New England Patriots were a great scoring team, so there’s a chance it’ll rub off in Motown.

Scoring wise, I see the Lions finishing somewhere close to last year (7th). Rushing the ball, there’s no way they finish last. Their 13th ranked passing game should improve with a more balanced offense. Short yardage situations can’t get any worse either.
Overall, this phase of the game will stand out. I predict it’ll be the most improved group on the Detroit Lions’ team.
