The dynamics of this rookie class and what impact they will have in the coming season could change at anytime. If the Lions were to sign Johnathan Hankins or another defensive lineman or two that can contribute, then it would allow Hand to have the opportunity to learn the game and lower the expectations for at least his rookie season.

The other side of the coin is that the Lions could possibly acquire another veteran offensive lineman or running back that could change everything about how much these rookies will need to contribute. But I wouldn’t expect it.

In the NFL, first round picks have to contribute and I would expect nothing less from Frank Ragnow. He is a tough, hard working kid who has a chance to be the type of player that brings a nasty attitude to that group. An attitude that needs to be contagious.

The Lions O-line could use some attitude.

Also Kerryon Johnson has the potential to be a very productive runner in this league. The only concern is of course a history of injuries, but when he suits up, he plays hard and makes plays.

So there is no question how much those two should contribute right from the start of the season.

The real question is; how much will Da’Shawn Hand have to contribute? And will he be capable of playing at the level needed to help Patricia turn around a unit that became a weakness last season and will have to team with the linebackers to take back control of the line of scrimmage.

There is no questioning that Hand has first round ability, but the lack of displaying it on a consistent basis is why there would certainly be concerns about having to rely too much on him early.

It would certainly be no surprise to see the roster continue to change, especially on the defensive line, but until it does, Hand will have to be counted on to make plays.

Whether he’s ready or not.
