Somewhat forgotten in the competition at left guard for the Detroit Lions, Joe Dahl is still in the mix. Is that position his best fit?

Less than a week before Draft day, and the Detroit Lions still have questions on the offensive line. One question that’s not talked about as much, what’s going to happen with guard Joe Dahl?

Coming out of Washington State in 2016, the fifth round selection spent most of his collegiate career at left tackle. In the pros, his lack of length made a move to guard seem logical. Although he played guard his first eligible season following a transfer from Montana, that doesn’t mean it’s the best position fit.

One of Dahls’ weaknesses is pass protecting from a three-point stance, where he has little experience. Getting in his pass sets is made increasingly difficult when playing guard. Another thing he faces more as a guard is bull-rushes, which he struggles with at times.

So far, Dahl has looked solid as a run blocker. Granted, it’s too early to write him off at guard, but his natural fit seems better at tackle. Another position that allows him more time to anchor in pass pro is center, where he saw limited snaps in practice.

Year three could bring different results. Injuries hurt the third year lineman’s chances of making a smooth switch to guard last season.

It’s almost inevitable the Lions will draft a young interior offensive lineman to challenge Dahl for the job. The line could get shuffled around depending on what position (guard or center) is selected.

For the moment, the hole is at left guard. If the season started today, Dahl is likely the guy to fill that spot. Locking down the left side at both guard and tackle are the best places for him to succeed. Emergency center is something he could handle as a last resort.

Joe Dahl isn’t getting enough attention and has been an afterthought for most. I see an athletic player who’ll need to get beat out before he gives up his job. He’ll have a real shot at becoming a starter in 2018. This season could be the year Dahl finally breaks out.
