With Eric Ebron now gone from the Detroit Lions, it is an exercise in futility to see where he ranks on the all-time ‘Tecmo’ Detroit tight end team.

Last week, in this Tecmo Bowl-themed series, we covered the Detroit Lions all-time quarterbacks. This week would follow logically with the running backs.

I can think of at least one name at the running back position off the top of my head – James Stewart. That’s not it. Maybe I’m thinking of actor Jimmy Stewart? No, you know what the name is? Kevin Smith. Wait, maybe I’m thinking of the writer/director Kevin Smith? I’m sure the name that I’m thinking of will come to me.

But I wanted to skip ahead to the all-time tight ends.

The overall roster rules are based upon the 1991 “Tecmo Super Bowl” game. Those rules are set forth in my ‘Tecmo’ quarterbacks article.

STARTS WITH THREE NAMES

The tight end position is one of the weakest on the current roster for the Detroit Lions, especially after cutting tight end Eric Ebron on the eve of free agency.

When I formed my initial tight end list back in late February, the first name that I wrote down was Ebron, along with tight ends Brandon Pettigrew and David Sloan.

After some research of the past 27 years, those three names (as I initially guessed) were at the top, so here is an overview of each of their stats as Detroit Lions:

  • Eric Ebron – 4 seasons (56 games)
    • 186 receptions, 2070 yards, 11.1 yards per reception, 11 TD
  • Brandon Pettigrew – 7 seasons (93 games)
    • 301 receptions, 2965 yards, 9.9 yards per reception, 17 TD
  • David Sloan – 7 seasons (90 games)
    • 180 receptions, 2024 yards, 11.2 yards per reception, 15TD

On ‘Tecmo,’ the tight end position is one starter and one backup. One of the above three will be the honorable mention. Beyond that, the tight end position is particularly rife with odd little tidbits over the past 27 years, which are also worth a look.
