Eight years later, and the NFL appears to have gotten that controversial Calvin Johnson “no catch” call right. That and more in today’s Detroit Lions’ headlines.

The Detroit Lions, as well as every other NFL team, are at the NFL Scouting Combine this week, evaluating the next group of college football superstars slated to join the league in April. While they are all in a bit of a bubble in Indianapolis, news surrounding the Lions continues to swirl.

From Calvin Johnson’s controversial no catch call, to using the franchise tag on Ziggy Ansah and five free agents to watch next month, here are today’s best Lions’ headlines.

It appears, after eight years, the NFL is getting closer and closer to defining a catch in a way that makes Calvin Johnson’s controversial touchdown grab from nearly a decade ago finally “a catch”. The NFL competition committee will now send their revised rule changes to the owners for a vote.

Despite the start of the Scouting Combine on Tuesday, the Lions were still able to get a little offseason work done that doesn’t involve the draft. Detroit announced they intend on using their franchise tag on defensive end Ziggy Ansah. It’s a smart move as it gives the Lions another year to decide whether the aging pass rusher is worth a long-term deal or not.

It’s amazing to think that the Lions actually spent more money than any other NFL team last season and all they got in return was a 9-7 record without a playoff berth. Hopefully, that investment pays off in 2018.

Just because the Lions franchise tagged Ziggy Ansah doesn’t mean they won’t grab a pass rusher high in the upcoming NFL draft. New head coach Matt Patricia is really a wild card here. What Patricia needs to upgrade this Detroit defense and reshape it is anyone’s guess right now.
