I’m glad the Detroit Lions are not “America’s Team”. It simply does not apply. They are the “common man’s” team. That something fans are a proud of.

The Detroit Lions are not for the faint of heart. They are not the popular choice. They possess a hardcore fan base judge the team on the performance of their front office, coaching staff and the players on their roster. Lions fans are not shy about letting you know how they feel.

As a passionate Detroit Lions fan, making the playoffs is how a successful season is gauged. No Lions fan ever seriously dreams or even mentions the Super Bowl. We all know better than that. Lions fans embrace the offseason and all that comes with it. It is a way of life for many die hards.

When former New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia stood at the podium during his introductory press conference, he never once mentioned the big game. Even though he coached in more than a few of them. In my opinion, that was a smart move.

Instead, Patricia talked about building this team and continuing to get better. You know “common man” talk. And Lions fans would not have it any other way. No skyrocketing expectations. Instead, bringing those expectations down into a focal point and setting a clear path for the Lions to take.

No Super Bowl will be played, won or lost until Detroit’s builds up this current roster. Fans should be reading between the lines. There is always work to be done.

Spearheaded by general manager Bob Quinn, who is in charge of shaping the Detroit Lions current roster, the team will also search for future stars and add some much needed depth. In the mean time, fans can expect not a single mention of the Super Bowl. Instead, they’ll get a steady diet of “We are building, trying to get better.”

That is the “common man” way. That’s the art of being a true Detroit Lions’ fan.
