All signs point to Matt Patricia being hired as the new Detroit Lions head coach. How equipped is our roster to adapt to the Patriots style of offense or defense? Will Patricia allow Jim Bob Cooter stay as the offensive coordinator? Let’s look at some implications of how personnel could be affected.

The New England Patriots are heading to their seventh straight AFC Championship game this coming weekend. Bill Belichick, head coach and general manager, is the driving force behind what can only be called a dynasty. The Belichick dynasty has five Super Bowl rings as its legacy for other franchises to chase.

At the front of this unprecedented success is the Patriots’ field general, quarterback Tom Brady. To a lesser degree, the stream of talent, including coaches, has been vital to the Patriots, as well. Matt Patricia is one of those coaches who has been climbing through the ranks quickly.

Why Patricia?

Matt Patricia has been an assistant on both sides of the ball, and defensive coordinator since 2012.

Even if we didn’t know all of the specifics, we knew that the Patriots have been the model of success in the NFL.

The true hallmark of Belichick teams has been their versatility, though. The Pat’s seem to switch offensive schemes and defensive schemes weekly, or even by quarter, depending upon their opponent.

Surely, Matt Patricia, the apparent preference of Lions general manager, Bob Quinn, has benefitted from both the success of that philosophy and having to manage the chaos of switching personnel and tactics so often.

What are the kinds of typical formations and personnel used by Patricia and the Patriots?

Do the Lions have the roster flexibility to mimic the Patriots’ philosophy of versatility?
