Facing a do-or-die game, the Detroit Lions need to win to make the playoffs. Another tough fought game is expected.

Win out, and the Detroit Lions have a chance. Lose, and there goes any shot at reaching the postseason.

Exploit matchups on offense

Man, if the Lions could repeat last week’s rushing performance, it’ll do them wonders. 91 yards is mediocre, but that’s one of the best performances of the year for Detroit.

Don’t let the record fool you, the Bengals are dangerous. Their pass rush is among the best in the NFL (7th). If the Lions can’t find balance and get too pass happy, trouble will strike.

As far as weaknesses, Cincy isn’t very stout against the run. Don’t be surprised if Detroit can get it going on the ground, then start opening it up with the pass.

Defense needs to rally to the football

Wherever the football goes, the Lions need to pounce. The Bengals heavily rely on wide receiver A.J. Green and running back Joe Mixon. Take those players away, and the troubles of shutting down this unit diminish greatly.

Andy Dalton is most likely under duress all afternoon, as his offensive line is a disaster. This gives Detroit a good shot at corralling the opposition’s offense.

Avoiding poor tackling against Cincinnati’s top playmakers should secure a win. Sticking to the fundamentals will go a long way.

Pull some tricks out of the bag

In desperate times, the measures must follow suit. Without winning the final two games, the Lions are out of the playoff hunt.

Week 16 and 17 is essentially the playoffs for Detroit. With the pressure on, getting creative in all, some or one of the three phases of the game can catch Cincy off guard.

The Lions aren’t used to the cold weather and are at a disadvantage because of it. Victory will come by getting crafty on the Bengals and leaving everything out on the field.
