The Detroit Lions will get to see their first action of the season, facing the Indianapolis Colts in the team’s preseason opener on Sunday, August 13th. The Lions made the trip to Indiana on Thursday for joint practices with the Colts and will play at Lucas Oil Stadium in a rare afternoon game. The rest of Detroit’s preseason matchups will all be at night.
Generally, the first game of the preseason is a very light one for the team’s starters, if they even play at all. Instead, younger, more inexperienced players are usually given the bulk of playing time as coaches will try to ease their veterans and big name stars into the mix in the following exhibitions.

This Sunday’s preseason opener should give Lions’ fans a glimpse of the future, with rookies like linebacker Jarrad Davis, cornerback Teez Tabor and wide receiver Kenny Golloday likely to see a lot of snaps. There are also several positional battles to watch. Specifically at left tackle, left guard, outside linebacker, along the defensive line and in the secondary.
