Detroit Lions, NFC North Position Rankings: Kickers and Punters
By Jack Ozark
2. Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers rank number two this week even with a rookie as their punter. The ranking is being carried by longtime Packer and clutch kick maker, Mason Crosby.
Crosby has been the kicker since 2007. And other than an abysmal 2012, where he only made 64% of his kicks, he’s been great for the Packers. Kicking clutch is a real thing and making a kick to win a playoff game is where it shows. Teams draft kickers hoping that they will turn out like Crosby, unfortunately for them that isn’t always the case.
The punting situation for the Packers is an interesting one. In June, the team released their punter from last season, Jacob Schum. Instead, they are opting to go with Justin Vogel, a rookie our of Miami (FL.). He’s only 23 compared to Schum’s age of 28, which may have factored into this decision. If Vogel can be productive quickly, the Packers may have their punter set for the next decade.
Mason Crosby may be a good kicker, but he alone can’t get near the number one group this week.
