Super Bowl champion HB LeGarrette Blount hasn’t settled just yet into a deal with a vying NFL franchise. Certainly, the Detroit Lions could use his services running the ball this season.
A league rushing rank jump from 32nd in 2016, to 30th in 2017, is not something the administrative staff from the Detroit Lions are celebrating. Also, Lions running back coach David Walker has likely pleaded his case considering the absence of HB Ameer Abdullah, HB Dwayne Washington, and HB Theo Reddick down the stretch. Injured players are non-beneficial, and a unmet necessity in the running game is not something GM Bob Quinn is taking lightly. Halfback LeGarrette Blount could be just the powerhouse the Lions need this upcoming season. Last year, he rushed for 1,161 yards and 18 TD’s on 299 attempts.

Support for quarterback Tom Brady amongst New England Patriots fans might’ve undermined the superb performance Blount rendered last year, but the Lions scouting and player personnel have likely had eyes on Blount since October of last season. While the potential value that Blount could add to the Lions on the playing field is clearly edification, his financial needs may not be feasible with the current Lions cap situation.
Every time I receive wages I assess my finances to see where I can better meet the needs of my financial goals. While an undesirable shame keeps me in discretion, a hasted decision to overpay Blount may hamper the Detroit Lions in the long haul. According to Spotrac, the Lions have a current cap room of just under $6,000,000, but with unsigned rookies like linebacker Jarrad Davis and corner Teez Tabor, some financial analysis will need to be made before any inked gets laid. Of course, both kindergarten kids and football administration have no problem making cuts when necessary.
Detroit Lions
While I wouldn’t want to bring harmful karma by surmising which Lions players will enter the 2017 season as free agents, I can imagine that if administration plans on bringing Blount aboard, they have ideas of waiving a few One Pride roster members.
The Lions defense ranked 13th in points per game allowed last season. Despite the flack the Lions defense continues to receive, it is actually the offenses inability to sustain drives that is keeping the Lions’ defense from ranking top 5 in the NFL. Blount is a very good investment. It just depends on how much the Lions are willing to give for his service. To be blunt about it, he is worth at minimum a one-year, $2.5 million salary. He’s reaching the latter of his NFL career and will need to take a few dollars with him as he makes his departure. Time will tell.
