The NFL preseason schedule will be fully announced within the next few weeks. Today we got a preview of what to expect for what is probably the Detroit Lions’ most important exhibition game. Mike Reiss of ESPN reported Sunday that the New England Patriots will be coming to Ford Field for their third preseason game.

The third week of preseason the most important. It is generally the only game where their Week 1 starters will actually play through the first quarter, instead of sitting out after a drive or two. This gives fans in Detroit a good look at the New England Patriots. More importantly, it gives a general idea of how the Lions match up against them.

Their last preseason meeting took place in 2013. Detroit dominated the game and ended up coming away with a 40-9 victory, then proceeded to fall flat in the regular season. The last time the Patriots came to Ford Field in the regular season in 2010. Brady and the Patriots defeated the Lions 45-21 in that contest, scoring 21 straight points in the fourth quarter to put away the Lions who were within distance nearly all game.

The August meeting may not mean much, but it will be exciting to see the Lions take the field opposite the current Super Bowl champions.
