I get it. Most people have a hatred for Eric Ebron and have already labeled him a bust. Because of that, they want a new tight end. I also get that Gates is one of the greatest of all time and just so happens to be from Detroit.

But the fact remains that Gates will be 36 years old at the beginning of the 2016 season. Frankly I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gates either return to San Diego or possibly retire once he hits free agency. Gates is still productive, but his numbers are almost identical to Eric Ebron’s numbers in 2015. Ebron is also 14 years younger with a lot of upside. Instead of signing a 36 year old tight end, maybe the Lions would be better just dealing with the five drops that Ebron had in 2015, and focus on the improvements he made.
