One Year Benchmarks: Grading the 2015 Detroit Lions Draft Class
By Eric Ranes
Round 7 – Pick No. 23 (240 ovr) – OT Corey Robinson (South Carolina) C
With a 7th round pick I hope for either a high-upside player or a high-octane special teamer who doesn’t currently possess the tools to be a starter but will bring intensity and intelligence on every kickoff or punt. Robinson meets one of those criteria and it was a good sign that he was kept on the 53-man roster throughout the year, but did not often crack the active list. The jury is largely still out.
In the preseason he showed both the power traits that made him desirable as well as the sloppy technique and inconsistency that caused him to be drafted as late as he did. We will learn more about Corey in the coming year. If he can make the squad under a new general manager, that is a positive sign.
Pick grade: C
Other successful draft options in hindsight: Man, if I were in charge here I would have taken a shot at La’El Collins. I understand why all teams passed on him, but I have to think the likelihood of his threat sitting out a year due to the ex-girlfriend’s weird, unfortunate murder, in actuality, was low. Thus, why not spend a 7th round pick, which rarely pan out anyways? Collins was a 1st round talent.
