Can the Detroit Lions do the unthinkable tonight?
By Mike Payton
While the streak is in fact over, the Detroit Lions still have another streak they have to break against the Packers on Thursday night football. The Lions have not swept the Packers in a season series since 1991 of course. You can run, but you can never hide from 1991.
Unless of course the Detroit Lions find a way to beat that streak on Thursday night football which is just hours away at this point. Frankly the Lions need to win this game for many reasons. The most obvious reason is to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. But the biggest reason is that this is the Lions prove it game.
sure they beat the Packers in Green Bay. Then they defeated a growing Raiders team and an Eagles team that’s allowed 137 points in the past four weeks. But after a 1-7 start, the jury is still out on whether or not this Lions team has found a way to improve, or if they’ve just been playing teams at the right time. With a win or a loss on Thursday night, you’ll find out exactly what this Lions team is.
If you base everything on past history, there’s no way the Lions can beat the Green Bay Packers. The Packers currently hold the lions share(no pun intended) of the all time record at 97-68-7. The Packers are also 12-5 on the road against NFC North opponents since 2010. How could you not go with Aaron Rodgers in this game? Perhaps it’s because things have changed. Recent history favors the Detroit Lions.
The Lions have been able to stop the Packers as of late. While they weren’t able to win in Lambeau till this season, they were able to hold Aaron Rodgers to season low production in each of their last six meetings. The Lions have also been stellar against the Packers at home. In addition to being 42-38 all time against the Packers at home, the Lions have not been defeated by Green bay in Detroit since 2012. Furthermore the Lions have been able to control NFC North opponents in Ford Field as of late. The Lions have won seven of their last eight meetings against NFC North teams at home.
Can the Lions continue their good fortunes tonight against a reeling Packers team that’s lost four of its last five games and desperately needs a win to keep their postseason hopes intact? As always this game will come down to the performances of #9 in Honolulu Blue and #12 in Green and Gold. If a Lions defense that’s behind only the Texans, Chiefs and Panthers for fewest points allowed in the past three games, can continue to perform up to these new standards, the Lions can walk away with their first sweep of the Packers since I was six years old.
You have to hope that when it rains, it pours for the Lions after finally taking down the Lambeau streak just three weeks ago. We shall find out soon enough. We’ll be live tweeting the game tonight from our Twitter page. Be sure t follow along and meet us back here after the game for early post game analysis.
