The Lions open up the season on the road for the first time since 2011 as they head to Ron Burgundy’s home town to take on the Chargers.

The Lions are expected to be at full strength for the first time in 2015 as Haloti Ngata, Joique Bell, Jason Jones, DeAndre Levy and Calvin Johnson will be making their returns. This bodes especially well for the Lions considering they are going up against one of the better quarterbacks in the league in Phillip Rivers.

After scouting the Chargers dress rehearsal against the Seahawaks, I came away wondering if the Chargers offensive line will be able to protect Rivers from the Lions who are expected to blitz much more frequently in 2015. The Chargers allowed 8 sacks throughout the four preseason games and Rivers suffered for it. As did rookie running back Melvin Gordon who looked good at times, but doesn’t seem like he will jump into the record books right out of the gate.

Conversely the Chargers had a heck of a time catching Russell Wilson when he got in space. This could be a plus for the Lions running game as the Chargers ranked 15th against the run during the preseason.

I give the Lions their season opener. Win (1-0)
