Analyzing the different types of Detroit Lions fans
By Mike Payton
It’s a simple questions with a not so simple answer. What kind of Detroit Lions fan are you? Anyone who’s been around the team they’re entire life can tell you that there are several different types and they all have names and even sub categories.
Where do I fit in? I’m not sure. I know that I’ve exhibited different traits of the large variety at different points of my life. Some would say I’m a true homer, others have called me a Lions hater. My fandom has never come into question though and that’s the beauty of it. This group of fans is set up in such a way that you can be whatever kind of fan you want. Even if you catch some flack for it.
My story is just like any other Lions fan’s story. I became a fan through heredity. My family has long been Lions fans all the way back to the Alex Karras days and probably beyond that. I’ve sat in front of the TV on thanksgiving day for as long as I can remember and I always learned something new from an elder family member. Whether it was a new curse word or which beer to drink while watching the Lions (Grandpa’s favorite was Strohs) There was always a lesson to be learned about their beloved Detroit Lions.
I’ve carried those lessons and my Detroit Lions fan card through my entire life. Even when we moved to Memphis, Tennessee in high school, or when I went to college in California, My love of this team has never died and never will. I’ve been happy to have passed this addiction onto my wife and someday I will pass it to my kids.
But enough about me. Today I want to break down the many different kinds of Detroit Lions fans. Read along and see which category you fit into and most of all, have fun.
