No. 91 Jason Jones
Age: 29
Height: 6’5″
Weight: 276
What has he done?
Jason Jones is the other starter at defensive end for the Detroit Lions. Injuries have plagued him his entire career, last year was the first time he played a full season. The Lions need him to stay healthy and improve as a pass rusher in 2015. Pro Football Focus rated him as the worst player overall on the Lions defense last year and it was evident he was the worst starter on the Lions defense. His -8.0 pass rush grade was the worst on the team and dragged down his score significantly. He finished the season with 22 tackles, 5 sacks, and 3 pass defended.
However, he is a solid run defender and the team loves him in this role. He sets the edge well and occupies the closed end position, allowing Ziggy to make an impact from the open end position. He is a valuable asset for the Lions top rush defense and is a player Teryl Austin can rely on against the run.
What to expect?
In 2015 Jason Jones will see a lot of snaps at defensive tackle on pass rushing downs, he’s at his best rushing the passer against slower guards inside. His most productive seasons have come at defensive tackle and with the lack of depth at the position he will slide inside regularly. He needs to become a more productive rusher to be a complete player for the team. Lions fans can expect some similar run defense to prior years. He knows the defense well and is penciled in as the starter opposite Ziggy Ansah.
