The three tight ends all have a varying skill set, but they they also give the Lions a lot of flexibility when game planning. Teams are always looking for matchup advantages on offense. Two tight end sets became hugely popular after the Patriots deployed the Gronkowski/Hernandez combination a few years back.

The Lions will now be able to shift the focus away from Calvin Johnson, or at least make teams pay if they don’t. Ebron is clearly the “move” tight end in this offense. He’s the “Hernandez” if you will. He’s the guys that will motion into the slot, line up on the line of scrimmage, and play out of the backfield. Pettigrew becomes the “combo” tight end that will mainly line up on the line of scrimmage, but can also be a weapon in the passing game.
