Montell Owens
Cap Charge: $1,130,000
Cap Savings: $1,005,000
The starting fullback job will probably go to Jed Collins based on his previous experience in offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi’s offense. Like many of the other cap casualty possibilities, Owens is older (30) and making a lot of money to be a backup. He’s also coming back from multiple injuries last season and is in a battle with a younger, cheaper player.
Possible Replacement: Chad Abram
Abram is one of several UDFAs that could make the Lions roster this season. The Lions will need these types of guys to contribute if they expect to continue to pay Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Ndamukong Suh. In order to make the roster, Abram will have to beat out Owens both as a fullback and on special teams.
