Currently on the roster: Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, Jeremy Ross, Ryan Broyles, Kevin Ogletree, Patrick Edwards, Corey Fuller, TJ Jones, Kris Durham, Naaman Roosevelt, and Andrew Peacock
The Lions have continued their pattern of bringing in a ton of receivers to compete in the offseason, and there will be some great camp battles late in the summer. Obviously Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate are guarantees to make the roster, but much like at running back, the spots after are truly up for grabs–this is where versatility and special teams contributions could come in big.
Because of value on special teams, I see Jeremy Ross as a near lock to make the roster. He single handedly gave the Lions a spark on special teams last season, and I hope this coaching staff gives him more reps at receiver throughout this offseason.
I’m a Corey Fuller fan. His size/speed combination is intriguing, especially in Joe Lombardi’s offense. He’s the only real field stretching wide receiver that the Lions have on the roster and could fill a big need going forward. If Fuller can polish his game this offseason he’ll push Patrick Edwards right off the roster.
The other camp battle to watch is Ryan Broyles vs TJ Jones. Both guys are very similar types of players. My guess is that Broyles (if he’s healthy) will win the job, and the Lions will stash Jones on the practice squad as insurance.
My Guess: Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, Jeremy Ross, Ryan Broyles, Corey Fuller, Kris Durham (6)
