The Detroit Lions' 2026 schedule was officially revealed last week, and the scramble to analyze and make predictions has now begun with both fans and analysts alike.

Most believe the Lions will have a chance to improve upon a 9-8 season in 2025, and being able to do that will revolve around finding a way to win the games they are supposed to win while measuring up in some of their bigger showdown games.

Detroit will be involved in four primetime games this season, and while all of them are big on the surface, a pair do hit differently. Road battles against the Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings will prove to be a critical component to their schedule.

Pro Football Focus realizes this as well. Bradley Locker set out to rate every single Sunday Night Football game that will take place next season. Both of Detroit's appearances crack the top 10 list, and the Week 4 contest against the Panthers came in at No. 9

"The Lions were one of the biggest underachieving teams of 2025, although they still earned the third-best overall PFF grade. Culprits included an injured defense that fell to 18th in EPA per play, plus an offensive line that regressed to 11th in overall PFF grade. First-round pick Blake Miller, Cade Mays and other new presences will hope to mend those weaknesses."

"Carolina ended last year ahead of schedule, playing a competitive wild-card round with the Rams after winning the NFC South. The Panthers ended an inconsistent year 23rd in overall grade, but the team looks better after making two free-agent splashes in Devin Lloyd and Jaelan Phillips."

"It’s still unknown just how good either of these squads will turn out to be next year, but this game should provide some clarity."

Both the Panthers and the Lions are in an interesting place. Carolina made the playoffs last season, and while they lost their game, they enjoyed a resurgent season and have opened eyes. The Lions signed center Cade Mays away from them this offseason, and are attempting to get back to the postseason and rediscover their magic.

It's a pair of teams who have flipped their usually bad fortunes lately, and the Lions should be hungry to prove they are on a better path in the NFC very early next season.

Lions battle with Vikings also cited a top SNF matchup for 2026

Just a few years ago, the Lions hosted one of the bigger games in their history when they tangled with the Minnesota Vikings with the NFC North on the line in the final game of the season. In 2026, similar things could be on the line as the season wears on.

Detroit's visit to Minnesota didn't go well in 2025, and they will be looking to atone for a frustrating sweep at the hands of the Vikings last season. Locker ranked that Week 15 game the No. 10 top SNF game of the season due to the rivalry and usually high stakes between the teams.

"In 2025, Kevin O’Connell’s group swept the Lions, including downing them 23-10 on Christmas in a coal-stuffed showing for Detroit. In the last two seasons, this NFC North rivalry is split at 2-2. The stakes will be elevated this late in the year for teams that look at least solid, although the question is which (if either) side will be among the league’s best."

While the Lions didn't measure up against Minnesota in 2025, they have a previous solid history against them head-to-head. From 2022 to last season, they went 5-1 against the Vikings, and owned the season series. It will be important to get back to that level of dominance again, and this game will go a long way towards settling where the Lions are at.

Four primetime games may not be a ton, but the Lions have a chance to measure up in all of them, and more specifically, these two against top NFC competition.
