4 players who are likely playing their last games with the Detroit Lions
1. OG Halapoulivaati Vaitai
Vaitai will forever be known as a free agency mistake by the Bob Quinn/Matt Patricia in Detroit, and he's the last vestige from a long list of mistakes by that regime. He was simply not worthy of a five-year, $45 million deal, and with injuries as a factor that has been proven out. A contract restructure last March effectively made this the final year of his contract by making 2024 a void year.
A back injury cost Vaitai all of last season, and being at home as he recovered had him pondering retirement. But he came back, and he took back the starting job at right guard. A knee injury opened the door for Graham Glasgow to take his place early this season. With others healthy now coming out of the bye, Glasgow is done moving around the Lions' interior line (for now?) and locked into that starting job at right guard.
The way things have gone in terms of the Lions having their entire starting offensive line healthy together, as in it has happened for one game in two-and-half seasons, Vaitai might be needed to start some games before the season is over and his guard/tackle versatility has value.
Vaitai is the kind of guy who fits nicely into the Lions' culture. But consistently banged up and without a starting job now, he's entering the final weeks of his run in Detroit.
