5 options for the Detroit Lions to add to their quarterback depth
2. Carson Wentz
The Colts and Washington Commanders have parted ways with Wentz without regret in the last two offseasons respectively. Surely humbled after the Commanders cut him, Wentz/his agents made sure it got out that he is open to any role on a new team.
Now, more than two months later, there have been no indications of any teams having serious interest in Wentz. With the draft in the books, that could change and there are some appealing potential fits out there for him, mostly as a strict backup.
The Lions haven’t been tabbed specifically as one of those fits much of anywhere, but perhaps they should be. In terms of pure talent, Wentz would be No. 1 on this list.
1. John Wolford
Wolford has spent his career up to this point with the Los Angeles Rams. It’s safe to say he won’t be going back there, after they drafted Stetson Bennett and signed Brett Rypien to fill out the depth chart behind Matthew Stafford.
Wolford is 2-2 as a starter in his career, including the regular season finale in 2020 when Goff was banged up. He also started the Wild Card Round playoff game after that, before being replaced by Goff.
Wolford is familiar with Goff from that year together with the Rams, which could be overblown but also has some intrinsic value. The Wake Forest product would straddle the line of camp arm and an option to win the No. 2 job over Sudfeld, but as available viable options go there is a possible fit for the Lions here.
