Detroit Lions post-free agency 7-round mock draft: Who goes at No. 6?
First Round
Cornerbacks Devon Witherspoon and Christian Gonzalez were available for me here, and I almost went with one of them. But it’s a deep class of cornerbacks, and I leaned into the idea there will be value down the board.
So I went with Wilson, the dymanic edge rusher out of Texas Tech. He posted seven sacks in each of his last two seasons as a Red Raider, with 13.5 and 14 tackles for loss respectively. He is still raw in some respects, but he’s not lasting through the top-10 overall.
Wilson has good size (6-foot-6, 271 pounds) and exceptional length (86-inch wingspan), with versatility to play everywhere along the defensive line that would make him a nice fit in Detroit. Any idea of taking the proverbial “best player available” starts here with Wilson for the Lions.
Porter seems to have fallen off the radar just a bit, as other cornerback prospects have risen in the minds of people during the pre-draft process. But he is going to be a first-round pick, with No. 1 cornerback skills and the alpha demeanor of a former NFL player’s son (which of course he is) to match his talent. He has good size (6-foot-2), and he ran a 4.46 40 at the NFL Combine.
Porter would not have to be thrown right into the fire as a starter for the Lions, even if he could be right out of the gate if the situation dictated it. Not having to be pressed into a huge role would allow him to refine some edges of his game.
One potential red flag for Lions’ fans here. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein has offered now former-Lions cornerback Amani Oruwariye as a comp for Porter.
