4 external options for the Lions to replace safety Tracy Walker
1. Anthony Harris, Denver Broncos practice squad
Harris had an odd run late this summer, as he was released and then signed back to the practice squad by the Philadelphia Eagles. Apparently seeing no real path to the active roster in Philadelphia, he then asked to be released and landed on the Broncos’ practice squad. Feels like a lateral move that ultimately was not well-played by Harris.
Harris led the NFL in interceptions playing for the Minnesota Vikings in 2019, with six. It was telling that they only franchise tagged him in 2020 instead of making more effort to sign him to a multi-year deal, but it was proven right. He has one interception in the two seasons since, including 2021 with Philadelphia, though he did top 100 tackles for the Vikings in 2020.
Harris would add experience to the Lions’ secondary, with solid tackling ability and a general nose for being around the ball even if he’s not the outright ball hawk he was. He can be poached off Denver’s practice squad, and he’s probably on Detroit’s radar if they’re looking at any outside options to replace Walker.
Other potential options: Tony Jefferson (Giants practice squad), Jaquiski Tartt (free agent)
