2. QB David Blough

The lowlight play from Blough’s showing in the preseason opener is a fumbled snap when the Lions were trying to close out a win. And based on what we saw on “Hard Knocks”, he took it hard.

But otherwise Blough’s work against the Falcons was fine, and in most ways better than Tim Boyle, the proverbial running favorite to be Jared Goff’s primary backup. And yes “fine” is enough to have pushed Blough toward winning the job, compared to Boyle’s inconsistency and general lack of ability to be interesting.

Blough should get plenty of playing time agains the Colts. Let’s say something close to a half with Dan Campbell announcing a number of starters won’t play, Goff’s playing time unclear and likely minimal if he does play.

At this point, Blough is about as likely to be cut in favor of Boyle, if the Lions only keep two quarterbacks on the final 53, as he is to push Boyle to the roster bubble with a good showing against the Colts. The Lions No. 3/No. 2 quarterback is someone who’ll be worth watching on Saturday, with Boyle worth a casual mention as the two continue to battle for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.
