5 options to upgrade the Detroit Lions backup quarterback situation
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has clearly stated his desire to be a “quarterback factory”, churning the depth chart and leaving no stone unturned to do so. From drafting Jalen Hurts when Carson Wentz was in place, to trading for Minshew to most recently signing Carson Strong as an undrafted free agent, he is committed to the bit.
Minshew became a hero in Jacksonville in 2019, with his mustache and unique sense of style inspiring “Minshew Mania.” He was also a decent (93.1 passer rating) and fairly efficient (37 touchdowns, 11 interceptions) quarterback over his two seasons in Jacksonville, which shouldn’t be overlooked.
Minshew started two games for Philadelphia last year, with four touchdowns and one interception over four total appearances (60 pass attempts). The calls for him to usurp Hurts have subsided, not that they bore much teeth anyway.
If a team makes a trade offer for Minshew, and the Eagles are comfortable with Strong (or someone else they might entertain as they become available) as their No. 2 quarterback, it’s a fair assumption Roseman would give it more than a courtesy glance.
In Detroit, it would be very easy for the masses to make Minshew into a threat to usurp Goff. But the Lions have been very clear about their commitment to Goff for 2022, and Minshew seems sure to know his place as the backup. If he had to play the Lions would have a better chance to win than either Boyle and Blough can offer, and it would also be fun to watch him.
