5 Detroit Lions who should be entering their final season with the team in 2022
2. QB David Blough
During Jared Goff’s early struggles last season, it says it all that Campbell had no desire to play Blough outside of a few late snaps in the 44-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Halloween. Goff suffered an oblique injury in the Lions’ next game, after a Week 9 bye. If Tim Boyle hadn’t been healthy enough to step in in Week 11, coming off a preseason injury, Blough would’ve been forced into action.
Blough of course has started games for the Lions, with a winless mark in five games filling in for Matthew Stafford in 2019. He was re-signed as the No. 3 quarterback for some reason this offseason. If he makes it to Week 1 and lasts through the season somewhere on the team, be it active roster or practice squad, Blough will certainly not be back in 2023.
1. QB Tim Boyle
As mentioned, Boyle made his first three career NFL starts in place of Goff last season and was largely awful (63.5 passer rating in those three games, with three touchdowns and six interceptions). But the organization likes him so much, they decided to bring him back on another one-year deal as Goff’s backup and basically resign themselves to losing any games he’d have to start in 2022.
A potential draft pick would theoretically become the No. 2 quarterback behind Goff. But it doesn’t really matter, Boyle will either be on another team (NFL, USFL? or XFL?) or selling car insurance come this time in 2023.
